FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono is at the centre of a police investigation following the death of CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel after a collision during their Spanish second-division meeting on Monday.
De Miguel, 30, died on Tuesday morning after suffering a cardiac arrest following the incident, which occurred in the closing stages of the match at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López.
Owono had rushed out of his goal to challenge for a long ball near the halfway line when he collided with De Miguel, appearing to strike the forward in the chest with his knee. The goalkeeper was shown a straight red card, while the match was abandoned with the score at 2-2.

De Miguel received treatment on the pitch before being taken to hospital. He was admitted to intensive care, but his condition deteriorated before Tenerife confirmed his death at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday.
Spain’s National Police have opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the player’s death. The case is now under judicial supervision, with authorities seeking to establish exactly what happened during the collision.
The investigation does not, however, establish that Owono committed a criminal offence. The circumstances of the challenge and whether any criminal responsibility arises will be matters for the authorities to determine.
The 25-year-old Equatorial Guinea international has also faced hostile reactions online following the incident. Reports indicate that he deactivated his Instagram account amid the wave of abuse.

The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of condolences from clubs, players and football authorities across Spain. FC Andorra and Tenerife have expressed their sympathy to De Miguel’s family and the wider club community.
The incident has also placed Owono under intense emotional pressure, although claims about his private state of mind and specific conversations with De Miguel’s family have not been independently established.
As the investigation continues, the football community faces the difficult task of mourning De Miguel while allowing the facts surrounding the incident to be established.
