Who is Ghana’s most creative player in Europe’s top leagues?

When Ghanaian players are talked about, it’s often about how strong or hardworking they are.

This stereotypical view of Ghanaian players has become entrenched due to the successes of players like Michael Essien and Sulley Muntari in Europe.

However, Ghana has had its significant share of technically-gifted, creative players as well. From Anthony Baffour to Abedi Pele and Kwadwo Asamoah, the nation had produced players who could pick a pass as well as anyone.

This season, Ghanaian players have been racking up the assists in Europe’s top leagues.

Alfred Duncan is Ghana’s most creative player with five assists for Sassuolo so far this season although he’s not created a goal since he moved to Fiorentina.

Swansea vice-captain Andre Ayew also has five assists in the Championship while, perhaps surprisingly, out-of-favour Christian Atsu has laid on 3 goals for Newcastle so far this campaign.

With the various leagues across Europe curtailed by the coronavirus pandemic, let’s look at Ghana’s assist leaders so far.

Here’s a list of Ghana’s assist-leaders in Europe.

  1. Alfred Duncan (Serie A – Sassuolo/Fiorentina) – 18 matches –  5 assists
  2. Andre Ayew (Championship – Swansea) 35 matches – 5 assists
  3. Andy Yiadom (Championship – Reading) 24 matches – 4 assists
  4. Christian Atsu (Premier League – Newcastle)  17 matches – 3 assists
  5. Christopher Antwi-Adjei (Bundesliga – Paderborn) 25 matches – 2 assists
  6. Abdul Majeed Waris (Ligue 1 – Strasbourg) 7 matches – 1 assist
  7. Kwadwo Asamoah (Serie A – Inter Milan) – 8 matches – 1 assist
  8. Bernard Tekpetey (Bundesliga – Fortuna Dusseldorf) 9 matches – 1 assist
  9. Jeff Schlupp (Premier League – Crystal Palace) 14 matches  – 1 assist
  10. Albert Adomah (Championship – Middlesbrough) 22 matches – 1 assist
  11. Joseph Aidoo (La Liga – Celta Vigo) 23 matches – 1 assist
  12. Salisu Karim (La Liga – Real Valladolid) 27 matches – 1 assist
  13. Jordan Ayew (Premier League – Crystal Palace) 28 matches – 1 assist

Honourable mention

Kwasi Okyere Wriedt (Bayern Munich II) – 25 matches – 3 assists
