Samuel Takyi should build reputation by fighting the best in Ghana – Joshua Clottey

SAMUEL TAKYI

Former Welterweight Champion, Joshua Clottey says the best way to get Olympic medalist, Samuel Takyi ready for a world title is by challenging more local boxers.

The 21-year-old Takyi recorded a round-one knockout over 36-year-old Nigerian, Samuel Moses in his third professional career fight last month

In an interview with Citi Sports, Clottey believes engaging in more local fights will build Takyi’s experience.

“Ike Quartey [his trainer] has to make him fight with most of the known African fighters for him to get better for the world stage. He is an Olympic medalist so he is always ready for a title fight. Even if he gets ten fights wins, he can fight for a world title. Because his amateur experience is less, he always has to fight the best boxers here in Ghana and see if he is ready for the world stage.”

Samuel Takyi won a bronze medal in the men’s featherweight division at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

He has subsequently been adjudged the 2022 Sports Man of the Year at Citi TV’s Entertainment Achievement Awards for the 2021 year under review.
