The second week of the betPawa Ghana Premier League 2023/24 season picked up right where the opening week left off with an action and drama-packed weekend.
Asante Kotoko’s disappointing start to the season continued. The porcupine warriors were 2-1 losers on their visit to Bibiani Gold Stars at Dun’s Park
Bibiani Gold Stars went into the game looking for their first win of the season following an opening-day loss to Berekum Chelsea.
Asante Kotoko had the upper hand in the lead-up to the game due to their unbeaten streak against the Miners – but the Bibiani lads had the last laugh at the end of the contest.
Gold Stars had a first-half goal from Alex Asso disallowed in the 20th minute. The former Inter Allies and Legon Cities anchorman took advantage of a goalkeeping error by Asante Kotoko goalkeeper Frederick Asare to spit home but the goal was ruled out much to the relief of the visitors.
Asante Kotoko levelled matters six minutes later after Sherrif Mohammed fired into the roof of the net from inside the box in the 71st minute.
Eric Bosomtwi latched on to a beautiful pass from the left side of midfield to score a spectacular from 40 yards – to give Bibiani Gold Stars the bragging rights. Bosomtwi controlled the ball with his left foot, before sending in an absolute stunner to beat Frederick Asare in goal.
The win gives Bibiani Gold Stars their first win over the Porcupine Warriors and their first of the season.
Elsewhere at the Accra Sports Stadium, Accra Hearts Of Oak on the other hand bounced back from their opening-day defeat in Tamale to secure a 1-0 win at home against Nsotreaman FC
Ramos Kashala Wanet scored the only goal for the Phobians in the 4th minute. Martin Koopman with his first three points in the bag.
At the Nana Agyemang Badu Park, Champions Medeama SC were disappointing on the road losing 2-0 away to last season’s runners-up Aduana Stars.
Captain Bright Adjei and Gabriel Mensah scored in the second half to hand maximum points to the Fire Club at the Nana Agyemang Badu I stadium.
At the Dr Kwame Kyei Sports Complex, Nations FC secured their first win of the campaign against Samartex 1996 in a comfortable 2-0 victory on home soil.
The Premiership newbies had their dominance paid off after Barimah Baah fired home a nice effort to score Nations’ first-ever top-flight goal.
Ivorian midfielder Amidou Diarra rounded off the victory for Nations in the 66th minute, having benefited from a James Sewornu mistake as they continued to dominate the match in the second period.
At the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park, Seth Osei Kwadwo’s second-half strike was enough for Bechem United to edge past Dreams FC in a slender 1-0 win.
Heart of Lions made it two points in two games by holding Great Olympics to a goalless draw at home at the Sogakope Park.
In Tamale, at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium, Karela United breezed past Brekum Chelsea in a 3-1 victory that saw Evans Adomako score a brace.
A third by George Amomoo put Karela in comfortable right after the hour mark.
Adoamko broke the deadlock on 19 minutes and completed his brace by netting in the 53rd minute. George Amonoo made it three on 63 minutes.
Newcomers Bofokwa Tano also secured their first win of the campaign at home in a victory 2-1 over Real Tamale United.
The win takes them to the top of the betPawa Ghana Premier League table with 4 points.
Accra Lions will host Legon Cities on Monday to bring match day Matchday 2 to a close.
