Ghana Basketball Federation Vice President (Administration), Alex Kukula, has stated that developing 3×3 Basketball is important in developing standard basketball.
He said this while addressing the Federation’s inclination to develop the abridged version of the sport that is fast increasing in popularity.
Ghana won silver in the 13th African Games Men’s 3×3 Basketball after falling 11-16 to Algeria in the final with Uganda finishing third. This is Ghana’s first medal and best finish in the competition.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Citi Sports, the path to improving standard basketball in Ghana lies in developing 3×3 Basketball.
“We chose 3×3 because the pathway to the international stage is easier than the 5×5 and 3×3 is a component of 5×5. So it’s a development tool. All the nations that have gone into 3×3 seriously have had their 5×5 teams improving so that is what we’ve chosen.”
“Now we have the infrastructure, hopefully we start introducing 3×3 into the high schools and the universities, those are the places we want to focus on.”
Winning silver in the men’s 3×3 basketball pushed Ghana’s medal tally to 69 which is the West African nation’s largest medal haul.
