President of the Ghana Olympic Committee Ben Nunoo Mensah says members of Ghana’s Amateur Boxing Team, the Black Bombers are well on course to leave Ghana on May 20 for Thailand to compete in qualifiers to the 2024 Olympic Games.
He said this in an exclusive interview with Citi Sports due to the controversy that has brewed in recent weeks over the team’s struggles to make it to the Asian country to attempt to make it to France.
He added that the Ghanaian contingent is standing by for their visas to make the trip and attempt to qualify Ghana to the Paris Olympics.
“We’ve already paid for their accommodation and feeding which was $20,000 which we’ve sent to the Thai Boxing Federation. What is outstanding now is our letters for visa on arrival…so I reached out to the IOC (International Olympic Committee) so that as early as possible they can send the visas on arrival letters to the boxers so that the team can leave Accra on May 20.”
Ghana won a bronze medal at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo through Samuel Takyi in the Men’s Featherweight Division.
