Communications Director for the Ghana Boxing Federation, Jojo Ephson, has stated that Ghana Boxing isn’t in a crisis but rather is a victim of circumstances of power play between world sports governing bodies.
He said this in his interview on Citi Sports’ Sports Panorama while reflecting on Ghana’s inability to feature in boxing at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Despite winning a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Games through Samuel Takyi, Ghana failed to build on that momentum and Ephson believes that is largely down to political power play by world bodies connected to the sport.
“Most boxing nations who are not setting their fundamentals right just like Ghana have become victims of circumstances of word power play in boxing of what is going on between World Boxing, IOC-International Olympic Committee and the Russia led IBA- International Boxing Association.”

“Africa has rather been at the receiving end; when you look at the continental distributions, Africa was just allotted seven males [weight categories] and 11 females [categories] from the continent compared to what happened in the previous Olympics in 2020, 33 for the men and 15 for the women.”
