The National Sports Authority’s board chairman, Seth Panwum, has stated that his organization is committed to ensuring that all four national stadia undergo the necessary upgrades, allowing more than one venue to meet the standards required for hosting Category C matches.
He shared this update as the Accra Sports Stadium remains under maintenance following Ghana’s match against Sudan and ahead of the final home game against Niger on November 18 in the 2025 AFCON QUALIFIERS.
Since then, the stadium has not been used for any Ghana Premier League matches, with Panwum explaining that this pause is intended to improve the stadium’s playing surface to meet CAF’s specified standards.
The Baba Yara is equally undergoing, let me say, renovation works, you know, and it has come of age.
The grass is up to standard now, there are plans to visit the place after the game against Niger and would go to Baba Yara as well to have a review of the work so far done there, you know, so that we can ascertain whether or not it is ready, then we can allow Kumasi Asante Kotoko to return to the pitch.
Yeah, we may even have more than two venues.
Cape Coast Sports Stadium is also being worked on as we speak, you know, and it’s the same consultant who is working on the Cape Coast Sports pitch as well.
And it is also growing fabulously well.
Last week we were there and we’ve seen the growth of work that is ongoing, it’s fantastic, you know, and we’re also looking at how to reposition Tamale also as another alternative venue.
So work at the Tamale Sports Stadium is also ongoing, even in partnership with Karela United, one of the premier league clubs that do play their matches in Tamale.
The last major renovations on the Accra and Kumasi Sports Stadiums took place when Ghana hosted the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations, with no significant upgrades made since then.
The deteriorating condition of these facilities caused uncomfortable situations over the past few years with the most recent being CAF’s decision to revoke the license of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, which served as the natural venue for the Black Stars in the World Cup and AFCON qualifiers.
