StarTimes Set to Return as Ghana Premier League Broadcast Partner

The Ghana Premier League (GPL) is set to see a major boost in its media coverage, as Chinese-owned pay-TV operator, StarTimes, is nearing a return as the league’s official broadcast partner. StarTimes, which held the broadcast rights until recently, halted coverage due to unresolved issues with the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

Speaking on Asempa FM, GFA Executive Council member Nana Sarfo Oduro revealed that negotiations with StarTimes are at an advanced stage, with the partnership expected to resume during the second half of the 2024/25 league season.

“We are almost finalizing talks with StarTimes, and it is likely they will return in the second round of the season to broadcast our games,” Sarfo Oduro shared.

A Rocky Broadcast Journey
StarTimes first secured broadcast rights for the GPL in 2016 under a ten-year agreement worth $17.9 million. The deal was aimed at transforming the league’s media presence, but it was terminated in 2019 due to a breach of contract after the GFA was unable to meet certain obligations. The GFA later re-engaged StarTimes in 2020 under a revised five-year deal worth $5.25 million. However, financial challenges emerged, leading to StarTimes suspending coverage due to the outstanding issues.

In StarTimes’ absence, the GFA shifted to free-to-air broadcasters such as Max TV for league coverage. While this provided wider accessibility, it has been criticized for poor production quality and limited global reach, particularly during the current 2024/25 season.

What StarTimes’ Return Means for the League
The return of StarTimes is expected to restore high-quality broadcasts, enhancing the viewing experience for fans and boosting the league’s international visibility. Additionally, StarTimes is anticipated to air FA Cup games, further broadening its impact on domestic football coverage.
