Head coach of Ghana’s National Men’s Football Team, Otto Addo has stated the reason behind his shock decision to start Accra Hearts of Oak Sporting Club goal keeper Benjamin Asare in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
He said this in a post-game interview after Ghana’s Black Stars thumped Chad 5-0 at the Accra Sports Stadium to move up to first place in Group I with 12 points from five games.
Asare earned his debut Black Stars call up for the game after impressing 18 games into the 2024-2025 Ghana Premier League season by registering 12 clean sheets.
The Hearts goalkeeper went on to bag his debut start with the Black Stars in the big win over Chad and Otto Addo revealed that Asare stood tall among the goalkeepers in camp hence his decision to start him ahead of Lawrence Ati Zigi and Joseph Wollacott.
“I think he did well in training. We observed all three, we saw a lot of games from the goalkeepers. It was a close race and they all did well in training. I must say Benjamin [Asare] did a bit better…that’s why we chose to play him” Otto Addo stated.

After having very little to do in the one side game, Benjamin Asare is in line to start for Ghana against Madagascar in another 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Madagascar on March 24.
