Ghana and Southampton star, Kamaldeen Sulemana, says Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew is the greatest Ghanaian to play in the English Premier League.
Sulemana’s pick stands out amid a legacy of Ghanaian talent in the EPL, including legends like Tony Yeboah, Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari, Asamoah Gyan, and the late Christian Atsu, as well as current stars Antoine Semenyo (AFC Bournemouth) and Mohammed Kudus (West Ham United).
Jordan Ayew’s Premier League journey began in 2015 when he joined Aston Villa from Ligue 1’s Lorient. The then-24-year-old forward spent two seasons with Villa, scoring 9 goals in 51 appearances before the club’s relegation in 2016.
In January 2017, he moved to Swansea City, where he netted 8 goals over two years, showcasing his versatility and work rate despite the Swans’ relegation in 2018.
Ayew’s career peaked at Crystal Palace, where he signed permanently in 2019 after a loan spell from Swansea. Over six seasons with Palace, he became a fan favorite, scoring 23 goals in 203 games and earning the club’s Player of the Season award for 2019-20.
In 2024, he joined Leicester City, adding to his tally with the Foxes.
When Asked to pick the best Ghanaian player to play in the Premier League in a Showmax interview, Sulemana said, “The one with the most goals in the Premier League is Jordan Ayew, right? He’s played for years and scored so many goals, so I’d say him.”
Now 33, Ayew recently hit a milestone of 300 Premier League appearances, a testament to his durability across nearly a decade in England. His stats include 41 goals and 25 assists which make him Ghana’s top-scoring EPL player, surpassing Tony Yeboah’s 24 goals and Michael Essien’s 17.
