Ghana Basketball Federation (GBBF) Secretary General, Rafiq Mohammed Arthur, has noted that issues concerning logistics and a “clearer” path to the top, makes it easier to promote 3×3 Basketball than the standard format of the sport.
He said this in an exclusive interview with Citi Sports ahead of the 3×3 Hoops Rave Basketball Championship that takes place at the Trust Sports Emporium in Bukom from April 10 to April 12 with 42 Senior High Schools competing.
Highlighting reasons behind the GBBF leaning more into promoting 3X3 Basketball, the administrator pointed to two key areas.
“It’s obviously one of the main reasons why we decided to go with 3X3. With five on five basketball, you need to have a team of 12 (players) and at most seven officials and that’s a huge financial burden. With 3×3, it’s just four players and a coach; there is a vast difference in the logistics.”

“Also, it’s easier to participate internationally and get to the top level of 3×3 rather than five on five which doesn’t mean we are relegating five on five to the background, no. We are also doing our best to promote and develop five on five basketball but for now we are trying to focus a bit on 3×3 basketball.”
