The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) on May 15, 2025, held a solemn minute of silence in memory of two influential figures in Ghanaian football; Wilberforce Mfum, a legendary former Black Stars striker, and Francis Yaw Frimpong, famously known as Nana Pooley, a devoted Asante Kotoko supporter.

The tribute took place during the 75th FIFA Congress held in Asunción, Paraguay, an annual gathering of global football leaders and stakeholders. The gesture was a powerful recognition of the impact both individuals had on Ghanaian football, on and off the field.

Celebrating the Legacy of Wilberforce Mfum

Born on August 28, 1936, Wilberforce Mfum was a cornerstone of Ghana’s football golden era. He played an instrumental role in the 1963 Africa Cup of Nations, helping Ghana win its first-ever continental title by scoring vital goals including in the final.

Mfum’s international career was prolific:

  • 26 appearances for Ghana
  • 20 goals, a record that still stands among the country’s elite scorers
  • 1964 Olympian, representing Ghana in Tokyo
  • Club career included stints with Asante Kotoko, Swedru All Blacks, and several clubs in the United States, notably Baltimore Bays and New York Cosmos.

His footballing intelligence, composure in front of goal, and contribution to Ghana’s rise in African football made him a national treasure. Mfum passed away on May 11, 2025, at the age of 88.

Remembering Francis Yaw Frimpong (Nana Pooley)

A familiar voice and face among the Kotoko faithful, Francis Yaw Frimpong, popularly known as Nana Pooley, was not just a fan but a tireless contributor to the club’s supporter base.

He served as a key figure in Asante Kotoko’s Supporters’ Communication Team, helping rally and organize fans across the country.

Tragically, Nana Pooley lost his life on February 2, 2025, while attending a Ghana Premier League match between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko SC at Nana Kronmansah Park in Nsoatre.

The minute of silence observed during the FIFA Congress honored their contributions and sacrifices to Ghanaian football.
