Spintex Knights Basketball head coach Thomas Amedeku has shared his thoughts on the circumstances that led to the controversial ending in the high profile game between Spintex Knights and big rivals Nungua Coldstore.
The game between last year’s Accra Basketball League (ABL) Men’s Division I finalists was brilliantly entertaining and ended tied at 75 at the end of regulation time.
However, Knights ended up winning the contest by default via 2-0 result due to Coldstore’s inability to field enough players in overtime to see out the game due to a combination of foul trouble and injuries to players picked up in the course of the physically demanding game.
A major flashpoint in the heated contest was Coldstore’s entire bench getting ejected for their involvement in an on-court melee.
The ejection led directly to the game ending via default in overtime but in a post-game interview, Spintex Knight’s head trainer was adamant his team won the contest by sticking to the rules.
Alright fellas, that was… something.

“We never come here to want to win a game by default; that’s not how we want to win our games. We want to win our game knowing that we came and won when the final buzzer went but the rules are the rules and if the rules say I get to win by default we will take it” Amedeku said and added that

“We play by FIBA rules and the rule says that when a fight or an altercation is going on, you can’t clear the bench; once you get on the court as a player, you get ejected. These are rules that are applied on the international stage and that’s where we want to be. That’s part of why you saw that our guys were composed and stayed on the bench.”
Spintex Knights are the defending league champions and competed in the Basketball Africa League earlier this year.
