A nominee to be appointed to Ghana’s Supreme Court, Justice Senyo Dzamefe, has defended the Commission of Enquiry into the 2014 World Cup Scandal’s recommendation to include at least three Ghana-based players in the Black Stars by citing the performance of Accra Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare as justification for such players’ inclusion in the team.
Justice Dzamefe chaired the aforementioned Commission of Enquiry after Ghana crashed out of the 2014 Mundial in Brazil in humiliating fashion.
Embroiled in reported issues of corruption, financial misappropriation and players threatening to boycott its final group game against Portugal, the government of Ghana was forced to fly a reported amount of $3 million to settle the disgruntled players.
Speaking before an appointments committee while being vetted, Justice Dzamefe stated that some recommendations made by the committee including flying supporters to tournaments to support the Black Stars, haven’t been implemented. (Click highlighted text to read full story)

However, a recommendation that has seemingly been implemented is the inclusion of at least three Ghana-based players in the Black Stars and Justice Dzamefe cited Asare’s performance for Ghana as justification for the recommendation.

“We also recommended that every time the Black Stars plays at least three local players should be in the team for continuity. You all saw the Hearts of Oak goalkeeper, the local player, who did very well in the post conceding no goals” Dzamefe said.

Asare started in Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar and registered clean sheets as Ghana recorded a 5-0 and 3-0 win respectively.
