Fluminense’s 0-0 draw with Mamelodi Sundowns at Hard Rock Stadium secured their place in the FIFA Club World Cup last 16 and confirmed the early exit of all four African clubs.
With Al Ahly, Wydad Casablanca, and Espérance de Tunis already eliminated, Sundowns were Africa’s last hope. But needing a win to leapfrog Fluminense in Group F, the South African champions couldn’t find a breakthrough despite a dominant start.
Rulani Mokwena’s side created early chances through Lucas Ribeiro, Tashreeq Matthews, and Divine Lunga, but Fluminense goalkeeper Fabio stood firm.

The Brazilians gradually settled, with Ignacio, Jhon Arias, and Nonato all going close before halftime.
Fluminense sat deep after the break, content to play on the counter. They nearly snatched the lead when Germán Cano hit the post, while Sundowns’ efforts were repeatedly cut short by offside calls and miscommunication in the final third.

Renato Gaúcho’s men held on for the point they needed, finishing second behind Borussia Dortmund and setting up a last-16 clash with Group E’s winner.
Sundowns exit with four points and their heads held high, as all Brazilian clubs march into the last 16 but Africa’s wait for a breakthrough in the revamped Club World Cup continues.
