Ghana’s Black Queens fell to a 2-0 defeat against defending champions South Africa in their 2025 WAFCON Group C opener on July 7 at the Honneur Stadium in Oujda, Morocco.

Linda Motlhalo opened the scoring from the spot in the 28th minute, before Jermaine Seoposenwe doubled the lead six minutes later with a clinical finish. Ghana struggled to create clear chances, with most of their attempts coming from long range.

South Africa’s performance lived up to their billing. Despite the absence of star striker Thembi Kgatlana, they looked sharp and efficient, underlining their status as one of the favourites to lift the trophy again.

The result leaves Ghana bottom of Group C with zero points, while South Africa top the group.

The Black Queens must now win their remaining games against Mali (Friday) and Tanzania (Monday, July 14) to keep hopes of qualification alive.

Ghana’s preparation ; which included friendlies against Malawi, Botswana, and Nigeria  did little to sharpen their edge.

Their struggle to break through South Africa’s organised backline exposed flaws in both tactical execution and in-game adaptability.
