Midfielder Grace Asantewaa says the Black Queens are thrilled to be in the semifinals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and believes the time has come for Ghana to finally lift the trophy.

Asantewaa was named Woman of the Match in Ghana’s dramatic quarterfinal victory over Algeria, which ended 0-0 after 120 minutes and was decided by a 4-2 penalty shootout win for the Queens.

Speaking after the game, she said the win was the result of weeks of hard work and belief; both from the players and Ghanaians back home.

I’m very, very, very happy, she said.

We’ve been preparing for this moment, and Ghanaians have been waiting for this too. Today, we had to give everything because it’s time for us to win this WAFCON.

The Mexican-based midfielder added that beyond the team’s ambitions, she is personally driven to make history with Ghana.

As an individual, I want my name in the history books; not just in Ghana, but across Africa and the world. This is a great tournament, and I want to be remembered.

So today, I’m proud. I’m very, very happy, and I know Ghanaians are happy too.”

Ghana will now face host nation Morocco in a high-stakes semifinal on Tuesday, July 22. The Black Queens are one step away from reaching their first WAFCON final since 1998.
