The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has appointed experienced coach and educator Stuart McLaren as its new FIFA Talent Coach under the global FIFA Talent Development Scheme (TDS).

McLaren will serve a two-year term, working directly under Technical Director Professor Joseph Kwame Mintah to implement the programme’s vision locally.

A UEFA Pro License holder with a rich background in both coaching and player development, McLaren is one of the select FIFA-approved Talent Coaches deployed to member nations as part of a worldwide effort led by FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development, Arsène Wenger.

His key responsibilities include observing matches, mentoring coaches, identifying talent in line with Ghana’s football identity, and delivering strategic insights to stakeholders.

McLaren brings decades of experience from across four continents, having coached at club and national levels in Scotland, Australia, and Ireland.

He previously managed the U-16 and women’s national teams of Scotland, Celtic FC’s U-18s, and served as assistant coach for the Republic of Ireland’s senior women’s side. He has also worked extensively as a coach educator with the Scottish FA.

Now in Ghana to begin his role, McLaren has already visited key sites such as the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram and the GFA Elite Academy in Winkogo.

His appointment is expected to strengthen Ghana’s youth football system and coach education pipeline.

The FIFA Talent Development Scheme aims to raise global football standards by helping member associations establish high-performance environments for youth development.

It emphasizes improved coaching, talent identification, and increased playing opportunities for young players across the world.
