NSA mourns the passing of Boxer Ernest “Bahubali” Akushey

The National Sports Authority (NSA) has expressed deep sorrow following the sudden passing of Ghanaian professional boxer, Ernest Akushey, popularly known in the ring as “Bahubali.”

His death was reported to have occurred on the night of Tuesday, September 23, 2025.

In a statement, the NSA extended heartfelt condolences to Akushey’s family, the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), the boxing fraternity, and the wider sporting community.

“The Authority shares in the grief of the bereaved family and the entire boxing fraternity, and stands in solidarity with them during this difficult time,” the statement read.

The NSA noted that it is awaiting the GBA’s full report on the circumstances surrounding the boxer’s passing.

It also reaffirmed its commitment to working with all stakeholders to ensure the highest standards of athlete welfare and safety in Ghana’s sports.

Ernest “Bahubali” Akushey was widely admired in local boxing circles for his grit and fighting spirit, earning a growing fan base in recent years.

His untimely death has shocked many in the sporting fraternity, with tributes pouring in from colleagues, fans, and officials.

The NSA emphasised that Akushey’s contribution to Ghanaian boxing will be remembered, and urged that his passing serve as a reminder of the importance of athlete welfare and support.
