In a series of explosive happenings coming out of the Cameroonian football circles, the latest big news has to do with the exclusion of long tenured national team goalkeeper Andre Onana from the team that would represent Cameroon at the 2025 AFCON.

This year’s AFCON commences in Morocco on December 21 with Cameroon placed in Group F alongside defending champions Cote D’Ivoire, Gabon and Mozambique amidst a major coaching change.

Belgian coach Marc Brys qualified Cameroon to the tournament but with mere days to the start of the competition, Cameroon’s Football Federation announced his dismissal with a brutal statement that accused Brys of subterfuge and unprofessionalism. (Click highlighted link to read full story)

Brys has since been replaced by David Pagou who served as an assistant during Brys’ time as head coach. Pagou has experience coaching in the Cameroonian top flight and proceeded to name a 28-man player unit for the AFCON but without some big names.

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana, who is on loan at Turkish side Trabzanspor, was omitted from the squad just as Napoli midfielder Franck Zambo Anguissa.

However, Anguissa was ommited from the team due to injury that also prevented him from competing in Cameroon’s 1-0 loss to DR Congo in the African leg of the Intercontinental Playoffs for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Onana has had his fair share of controversies stemming from his rocky relationship with former Cameroon head coach Rigobert Song. After an underwhelming two year stay at Man United, the ex Inter Milan shot stopper got shipped out on loan to Trabzanspor where he has featured in 10 games, conceded 11 goals and kept three clean sheets.

His former Man United teammate Bryan Mbeumo however, is included in Cameroon’s AFCON team alongside big names like Carlos Baleba of Brighton and Hove Albion.
