Morocco overcame a stubborn, deep-lying Comoros side to begin their Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a deserved 2–0 victory, finally breaking resistance that had threatened to frustrate the hosts for long spells.
As expected, Walid Regragui’s side dominated possession from the outset, pinning Comoros deep in their own half as the islanders set up with numbers behind the ball. Despite wave after wave of attacks, Morocco struggled to find a way through a compact and disciplined defensive block.
The first clear opening arrived early when Brahim Diaz was brought down in the box, but Comoros goalkeeper underlined his growing reputation by saving Soufiane Rahimi’s penalty, diving low to deny the winger and lifting belief among the underdogs.

Morocco continued to probe patiently, delivering crosses from wide areas and recycling possession around the box, yet clear chances remained scarce. Comoros, meanwhile, threatened sporadically on the counter, with Youssouf M’Changama twice testing Morocco’s concentration with ambitious long-range efforts.
The breakthrough finally came shortly after the restart. Noussair Mazraoui burst forward down the right and drilled a low cross into the area, where Brahim Diaz, left with just enough space, arrived to fire home and at last breach Comoros’ packed defence.

The goal stretched the game and forced Comoros to show more attacking intent, creating a more open contest. Pandor, however, continued to keep his side alive, producing a superb double save to deny Mazraoui and Jawad El Yamiq in quick succession.
Just as Comoros began to hope they might still find a way back, Morocco delivered the moment of the night.
In the 74th minute, Ayoub El Kaabi combined with Anass Salah-Eddine before timing his run into the box to perfection. Salah-Eddine lofted a teasing delivery, and El Kaabi met it with a stunning overhead kick, sending the ball crashing past Pandor in a goal that instantly lit up the stadium and is certain to be remembered as one of the tournament’s finest.

With a two-goal cushion, Morocco slowed the tempo and controlled the closing stages, seeing out the match comfortably as Comoros’ resistance finally faded.
The final whistle confirmed a 2-0 win for the hosts, giving Walid Regragui’s side maximum points from their opening Group fixture.
Morocco will face Mali in their second match, while Comoros turn their attention to Zambia.
