FIFA President Gianni Infantino is adamant things will proceed as planned in connection to Mexico hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite the serious security situation in the country.
Mexico is grappling with serious security concerns after a wave of attacks by gang members in several Mexican states following the killing of Ruben Oseguera Cervantes who is popularly known as El Mencho.
El Mencho led the powerful drug cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion until he was killed by the Mexican army leading to several burnt cars, shops and blocked roads in the country.
Mexican football games were postponed this weekend but a friendly game against Iceland scheduled for Wednesday, February 25 will go on as expected and Gianni Infantino believes the recent attacks won’t change the plans of FIFA as things stand.

“Mexico is a great soccer country. Just like in every country in the world, things happen; we don’t live on the moon or another planet. Things happen, and that is why we have governments, police, and authorities who are going to ensure order and security.”

“We are analyzing and monitoring the situation in Mexico during these days, but I want to say from the start that we have total confidence in Mexico. We are convinced that everything will proceed in the best way possible” Gianni Infantino said during the inauguration of the Colombian’s Football Federation’s Hotel.
