The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has described the passage of the Sports Fund Bill as a landmark step towards addressing the long-standing financial challenges confronting Ghana’s sports sector.

In a statement issued by GOC Communications, the Committee said the establishment of the Fund represents a defining moment that could place Ghanaian sport on a path of stability, structured growth and sustained international competitiveness.

GOC President Richard Akpokavie said the initiative marks a bold and forward-looking shift in the way sports development will be financed in the country.

He noted that inadequate and inconsistent funding has for years hampered athlete preparation, infrastructure development, technical training and grassroots programmes across various disciplines.

“Just as the Value Added Tax has become a reliable pillar for funding critical national interventions, the Sports Fund will serve as a dedicated and dependable stream of support for the development of sports in Ghana,” he said. “This is not just about funding competitions; it is about building systems, investing in talent and creating opportunities for future generations.”

According to the GOC, the Fund will enable National Federations to plan more strategically, implement long-term development programmes and improve athlete welfare.

The Committee believes that improved financial backing will strengthen federations’ operational capacity and enhance Ghana’s preparation for major continental and global competitions, ultimately translating into better performances on the international stage.

The GOC also commended the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie, for his leadership in steering the Bill through Parliament. The Committee praised his collaborative approach and determination, describing his role as instrumental in securing the milestone for Ghanaian sport.

In concluding its statement, the GOC expressed optimism that the Sports Fund will usher in a new era of accountability, transparency and excellence within the country’s sporting ecosystem.
