SL Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni has been handed a provisional one-match suspension following allegations of racist abuse made by Vinícius Júnior during last week’s Champions League encounter.

The Real Madrid forward reported the alleged incident to referee François Letexier during the first leg of the knockout play-off tie in Lisbon.

In a statement released on Monday, UEFA confirmed that a provisional suspension has been imposed on Prestianni while an ethics and disciplinary inspector investigates the matter.

European football’s governing body added that further sanctions could follow once the investigation has been concluded.

The second leg between Real Madrid CF and Benfica is scheduled to take place in Madrid on Wednesday at 20:00 GMT.

Vinícius Jr has previously been the target of racist abuse in Spain, and the latest allegation comes amid continued scrutiny of how football authorities handle such cases across European competitions.
