Fenerbahce head coach Ismail Kartal has resigned from his position following his side’s 1-1 draw with Roma in the Champions League.
The 65-year-old Turkish coach announced his immediate departure during his post-match press conference on Thursday, bringing an abrupt end to his fourth spell in charge of the Istanbul club.
Kartal’s resignation comes just days after he guided Fenerbahce back to the Champions League for the first time in 18 years, successfully navigating three qualifying rounds to reach the league phase.
Fenerbahce were held to a 1-1 draw by Roma at the Chobani Stadium, with Archie Brown scoring the equaliser after Bryan Cristante had given the Italian side the lead.
Explaining his decision, Kartal said he and his coaching staff had chosen to step aside to “clear the way” for the club and its future leadership.
He thanked the club’s board, players and supporters before leaving the press conference without taking questions.
Kartal also ruled out a return to the club in the future.
“I resigned while the path is still clear, with no intention of ever returning,” he said.
His departure leaves Fenerbahce without a permanent head coach as they prepare for the remainder of their Champions League league-phase campaign.
The club’s management has yet to announce Kartal’s replacement.
