Berekum Chelsea have described the arrest of a suspected gang leader and an accomplice in connection with the killing of their player, Dominic Frimpong, as a proactive step by the police.
The club’s reaction follows confirmation that the two suspects were picked up in connection with the robbery attack on the team’s bus, which led to Frimpong’s death.
Police sources say the arrests were made after a gun battle with officers, during which the alleged gang leader sustained injuries and was later taken to the hospital. The suspect is also reported to have admitted involvement in the incident.

Frimpong died from gunshot wounds sustained during the attack on April 12, 2026, along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Nyinahin District. The team was travelling from Samreboi to Berekum at the time of the ambush.
In an interview with Citi Sports, the Public Relations Officer for Berekum Chelsea, Isaac Obeng, commended the Ghana Police Service for what it described as swift and proactive action in pursuing the perpetrators, noting that the arrests offer some reassurance as investigations continue.
“We are waiting for the Ghana police to inform the club officially. But as I said earlier, we have trust in the Ghana Police, and we believe they will deliver on their promise. They have been very proactive. The arrest is good news for Berekum Chelsea and Ghana.”
The fatal attack on the 20-year-old player sparked outrage across the football community and raised fresh concerns about the safety of clubs travelling for domestic competitions. It also prompted calls for enhanced security arrangements for teams on match assignments.

Police say efforts are ongoing to track down other suspects believed to be involved in the robbery. Sources say the suspect has since admitted involvement in the robbery.
