Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior has taken a firm stance on discipline, dropping midfielder Enzo Fernández for the club’s next two matches following controversial comments linking him to Real Madrid.
Fernández will miss Chelsea’s FA Cup quarter-final match against Port Vale and the Premier League game against Manchester United.

The 25‑year‑old midfielder, who has been a key figure in Chelsea’s midfield this season, had recently been quoted discussing his future and expressing admiration for Madrid as a city, which was widely interpreted as him entertaining the idea of a move away from Stamford Bridge. The comments, which quickly gained traction among fans and pundits, have been interpreted as a distraction at a crucial stage of the campaign.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of Chelsea’s upcoming fixtures, Rosenior described the comments as disappointing and said they crossed a line in terms of what the club expects from its players, particularly someone in a leadership role.

“It’s disappointing to speak in that way. What I will say about Enzo is that, in terms of him as a person, I’ve got no bad words to say. But a line was crossed in terms of our culture. We had to make a sanction,” he said.
The decision to sideline Fernández sends a clear message about maintaining professionalism within the squad. The Argentine’s absence will be felt in midfield, where his creativity and control have been central to Chelsea’s play. However, the manager appears willing to sacrifice short-term quality to reinforce discipline and unity in the dressing room.
Enzo Fernández is expected to return after serving the two-match omission, but the episode raises fresh questions about player focus and the growing influence of transfer speculation in modern football. The midfielder remains under contract with Chelsea until June 2032, and the club has rejected suggestions that there have been concrete talks with Real Madrid, although the links persist in transfer speculation.
