Mainoo’s winner seals dramatic victory after second-half fightback

Manchester United produced a dramatic display to defeat Liverpool 3-2 in a pulsating Premier League encounter, holding their nerve late on to secure a rare league double over their fiercest rivals.

The hosts made a fast start at Old Trafford, taking the lead inside six minutes. Matheus Cunha capitalised on a loose ball on the edge of the area, striking through a crowded box with the effort taking a deflection before finding the net.

United doubled their advantage shortly after through Benjamin Sesko, finishing from close range following a well-worked attacking move. The goal survived a lengthy VAR review for a possible handball, a decision that sparked debate but ultimately stood, leaving Liverpool with an early mountain to climb.

At 2-0 down, Liverpool struggled to find rhythm in the first half, lacking cutting edge despite spells of possession. Their defensive vulnerabilities were also exposed, allowing United to control the tempo and create further chances before the break.

However, the second half brought a complete shift in momentum.

Liverpool responded almost immediately after the restart when Dominik Szoboszlai punished a defensive error, driving forward before slotting the ball past the goalkeeper to reduce the deficit. The goal injected belief into the visitors, who began to press higher and attack with greater purpose.

Their resurgence continued, and they found an equaliser in the 56th minute through Cody Gakpo. A costly mistake at the back allowed Liverpool to capitalise, with Gakpo finishing a well-worked move to bring the score level at 2-2.

For a period, Liverpool looked the more likely side to complete the turnaround, dominating possession and creating pressure as United struggled to regain control.

But just as the momentum appeared to favour the visitors, United responded.

In the 77th minute, Kobbie Mainoo restored the home side’s lead with a composed finish. After Liverpool failed to clear their lines, the ball fell kindly to the midfielder, who guided it into the far corner to make it 3-2.

The goal shifted the balance once again, with United rediscovering confidence and pushing forward in search of a fourth. Liverpool, meanwhile, continued to threaten but found it difficult to create clear-cut chances in the closing stages.

As the match entered stoppage time, tension grew around the stadium. With five minutes added, Liverpool pressed forward in search of another equaliser, but United’s defence held firm.

The final whistle confirmed a significant victory for United in a match that reflected both teams’ inconsistencies this season. Moments of quality were interspersed with defensive errors, contributing to an open and unpredictable contest.

United’s win not only boosts their position but also delivers a psychological edge over their rivals, completing a rare league double in this historic fixture.

Liverpool, despite their second-half revival, are left to reflect on missed opportunities and defensive lapses that proved costly.

In the end, it was Mainoo’s decisive intervention that separated the sides, sealing a memorable night at Old Trafford and adding another chapter to one of football’s greatest rivalries.
