Cape Verde pulled off the biggest shock thus far in the 2026 FIFA World Cup by securing a goalless draw with reigning European Champions Spain.

The draw further stretched Spain’s frustrating run at the World Cup after winning the competition in 2010; Spain have won just three games since winning the 2010 edition in the tournament.

The African nation, who are competing in the World Cup, for the first time earned the shock draw on the back of a resolute defensive performance with 40 year old goalkeeper Vozinha impressing with key saves.

His brilliant performance caught the attention of the football world and it has reflected in his social media following as his numbers swelled from 50, 000 followers on Instagram to 6 million after gaining 5.7 million followers overnight.

Speaking after the game, Vozinha (real name is Josimar Dias) shared how proud he was of the team’s performance and the result.

“I feel very happy and proud not only for myself but for all my colleagues and for all Cape Verdeans.  We worked hard to get on this stage…showing to the whole world our value against a very strong Spain. We managed to take a draw from Spain…we are satisfied and very happy; very happy for our work” Vozinha said after the draw.
