England defender Djed Spence appeared to decline a pre-match handshake with Black Stars midfielder Thomas Partey before their Group L clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on June 23 at the Boston Stadium.

The moment came amid weeks of speculation over whether the English FA would issue guidance to players on the customary pre-match handshake with Partey, who is facing criminal charges in the United Kingdom. Partey has denied all allegations.

Although reports suggested the FA had considered the issue, no formal directive was given to England’s players before the match.

While most England players exchanged handshakes with Partey during the pre-match formalities, a video footage shared online appeared to show Spence avoiding the gesture. The incident has sparked discussion on social media.

Partey returned to Ghana’s starting lineup against England after missing the Black Stars’ opening World Cup match against Panama due to visa issues that prevented him from entering Canada.

The midfielder remains available for selection while legal proceedings continue. He has consistently denied the allegations against him.

Partey’s involvement in the World Cup has attracted significant attention, and he was jeered by sections of the England support whenever he touched the ball during the match.
