South Africa have qualified beyond the group stage of the FIFA World Cup for the first time in the country’s history. They have been drawn to play Canada next on Sunday, June 28
The Bafana Bafana sealed their spot in the next round after beating South Korea 1-0 in a tough encounter that all but eliminates South Korea from the competition.
In its previous trips to the FIFA World Cup in 1998, 2002 and 2010, South Africa have failed to get out of the group phase but that streak has ended with Thapelo Maseko’s goal serving as the golden ticket.
Speaking after making history as the first coach to lead South Africa out of the group stage, head coach Hugo Broos shared his excitement.
“It’s very difficult to explain how it feels. It’s a fantastic experience. It was so tough today but we played a very good game, we had chances and technically, I think we played very good.”
“It was very difficult for South Korea to find the spaces, we defend good and in transition, we were dangerous and that’s what we wanted to do. We are in the second round, this is historical…I’m very happy for the guys –players” Broos said to Fox Sports.
