Minister for Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams says businessman Ibrahim Mahama has tasked him and Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku with obtaining the design of a stadium in the United States as a model for a new facility in Ghana.

The comments have sparked debate on social media, with many questioning the push for a new stadium while several existing sports facilities continue to suffer from poor maintenance.
Speaking after in an exclusive interview with Citi Sports after Ghana’s World Cup draw with England in Boston, Kofi Adams said Ibrahim Mahama, the brother of President John Dramani Mahama, was impressed by the stadium and wanted a similar project built in Ghana.
“We need to invest in sports infrastructure. I sat with Ibrahim Mahama during Ghana’s game against England, and he asked how much it would cost to build a stadium like this. Ibrahim Mahama has tasked Kurt Okraku and me with securing the Boston Stadium design so work can begin in Ghana,” Kofi Adams said.
The remarks have renewed a familiar debate about Ghana’s sports infrastructure, particularly the state of existing facilities.
Not long ago, several major football venues struggled to meet FIFA and CAF standards for international matches. The Accra Sports Stadium and Baba Yara Sports Stadium were both flagged over poor pitch conditions, inadequate dressing rooms, and structural deficiencies. The issues pointed to wider challenges in infrastructure management rather than isolated faults.

The National Sports Authority (NSA), which oversees these facilities, has repeatedly cited financial constraints and technical limitations as barriers to proper maintenance. While recent efforts, including plans to introduce pitch covers for selected stadia, are aimed at improving playing surfaces, questions remain over long-term sustainability.
Critics argue that the bigger challenge is not only building new stadiums but ensuring that existing ones are properly maintained and financially sustainable.
The debate has once again brought Ghana’s sports infrastructure management under scrutiny, with renewed calls for a long-term maintenance strategy alongside any new investment.
