‎South African football has been plunged into mourning following the death of Bafana Bafana midfielder Jayden Adams at the age of 25, just days after representing his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

‎

‎The country’s Ministry of Sport confirmed the tragic news on Saturday but did not disclose the cause of death.

‎

‎Adams played an important role in South Africa’s historic World Cup campaign, featuring in all three group-stage matches. He started against Mexico and the Czech Republic before coming off the bench in the decisive 1-0 victory over South Korea that secured Bafana Bafana’s first-ever qualification for the knockout stage of a FIFA World Cup.

‎

‎South Africa’s memorable run eventually ended in the Round of 32 following defeat to Canada.

‎

‎The midfielder also endured personal heartbreak during the tournament after the death of his grandmother, who passed away a day before South Africa’s clash with the Czech Republic. Adams was substituted at half-time in that match.

‎

‎At club level, Adams was a key figure for Mamelodi Sundowns, helping the Pretoria-based giants lift the 2025/26 CAF Champions League title after joining the club from Stellenbosch FC in January 2025.

‎

‎Tributes have poured in from across the football world following news of his passing.

‎

‎The South African Football Players’ Union described Adams as one of the country’s brightest talents.

‎

‎> “South African football has lost a gifted player, a proud servant of the game and a young life that still had so much to offer.”

‎

‎South Africa’s Minister for Sport, Gayton McKenzie, also paid tribute to the midfielder.

‎

‎> “Our nation mourns alongside his family, his teammates and the millions of supporters who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect into a full Bafana Bafana international.”

‎

‎FIFA president Gianni Infantino expressed his condolences in a message on Instagram.

‎

‎> “My thoughts and condolences, as well as those of everyone at FIFA and the global football community, are with his family, friends and teammates.”

‎

‎Adams rose through the youth ranks at Stellenbosch before earning a move to Mamelodi Sundowns, where he quickly established himself as one of South Africa’s most promising midfielders.

‎

‎He made his senior international debut against Mozambique in 2022 and went on to earn 13 caps for Bafana Bafana, scoring twice both goals coming during South Africa’s successful qualification campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

‎

‎His performances in North America further underlined his growing influence, making his sudden passing an immense loss to South African football.

‎Adams is remembered not only for his composure and quality in midfield but also for the resilience he showed in representing his country despite personal tragedy during the World Cup. His death brings a heartbreaking end to the career of a player widely regarded as one of South Africa’s brightest footballing talents.
