2026 World Cup: Egypt FA questions refereeing after Argentina defeat

The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has questioned the standard of officiating in Egypt’s 2026 FIFA World Cup defeat to Argentina, claiming several refereeing decisions and the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system had a direct impact on the outcome of the match.

In a statement released following the Pharaohs’ elimination, the EFA thanked supporters for their unwavering backing throughout the tournament before raising concerns over what it described as controversial decisions during the last-16 encounter.

The Association said while it accepted the result on the field, it could not ignore incidents it believes affected the course of the game.

“The Egyptian Football Association cannot remain silent regarding the refereeing decisions witnessed during the match against Argentina, as well as the failure to make appropriate use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system,” the statement read.

According to the EFA, several football analysts and refereeing experts, both in Egypt and internationally, had also identified controversial moments during the match, reinforcing calls for greater consistency and transparency in officiating at the World Cup.

The Association stressed that every team deserves equal treatment and the consistent application of the Laws of the Game, particularly at football’s biggest tournament.

“Defending the rights and interests of the Egyptian national team is not a matter that can be ignored, minimised or treated as secondary. Every player who wears the Egyptian shirt, and every supporter who stands behind the team, deserves fairness, respect and equal application of the laws of the game.”

Despite the disappointment of their exit, the EFA praised the performances of the national team, saying the players represented Egypt with honour, determination and courage throughout the tournament.

The Association also expressed appreciation to Egyptian supporters around the world, describing their backing as a major source of motivation for the players during the World Cup campaign.

“While the result is now part of history, our pride in this team remains unchanged. Their courage, commitment and fighting spirit throughout the tournament earned respect and reflected the true values of Egyptian football.”

Egypt bowed out of the World Cup following the defeat to Argentina, but the EFA insists it will continue working to protect the interests of the national team while building towards future international competitions.
