Morocco reached the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a commanding 3-0 win over co-hosts Canada in the Round of 16 at the Houston Stadium on Saturday, July 4.

Despite Canada’s bright start, Morocco made the most of their chances, scoring three goals from just five shots to register a 60 percent shot conversion rate, the highest by any team in a FIFA World Cup knockout match since records began in 1966.

Azzedine Ounahi scored twice in the second half before substitute Soufiane Rahimi added a third deep into stoppage time.

Rahimi has now recorded two goals and one assist in five World Cup appearances, with all three goal contributions coming off the bench, the most by an African player who has never started a World Cup match.

Brahim Díaz also continued his impressive tournament with another assist. His fourth career World Cup assist is the most by an African player, while his third assist of the 2026 tournament makes him only the second African player to register three assists at a single World Cup after Morocco’s Tahar El Khalej in 1998.
The opening half was unusually physical, producing just five shots but six yellow cards. It was the first half at a World Cup since detailed records began in 1966 to feature more bookings than shots.
The victory sends Morocco into the quarter-finals, while Canada’s World Cup campaign ends on home soil.
