Switzerland reached the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Algeria in Vancouver, advancing to the knockout stage for a fourth consecutive tournament.

Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye scored in either half as Murat Yakin’s side produced a composed performance to end Algeria’s campaign.

Embolo opened the scoring in the 10th minute, finishing from close range after Johan Manzambi’s assist. Ndoye doubled Switzerland’s lead just after the restart, capitalising on Algeria’s failure to clear the ball in the 46th minute.

Switzerland finished with 11 shots to Algeria’s eight and five efforts on target compared to two for the North Africans. Although Algeria saw more of the ball, they struggled to create clear chances against a disciplined Swiss defence marshalled by Manuel Akanji and captain Granit Xhaka.

The victory was Switzerland’s third straight at the tournament and secured a place in the Round of 16 for the fourth successive World Cup.

Switzerland will remain in Vancouver to face the winner of the Round of 32 tie between Colombia and Ghana on July 7 for a place in the quarter-finals.

The defeat ends Algeria’s campaign after only their second appearance in the World Cup knockout stage.
