The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a major increase in prize money for the 2026 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), with the tournament winners now set to receive $2 million as the 2026 edition is set to start 25th July, 2026
The champions’ prize has doubled compared to the previous edition, while the overall prize fund has risen by 67 per cent, increasing from $3.475 million to $5.8 million.
The runners-up will earn $750,000, while each of the 16 participating teams is guaranteed $150,000 in participation funding.
Major boost for women’s football
CAF said the enhanced financial rewards form part of its continued commitment to accelerating the growth of women’s football across the continent.
The governing body also revealed that the winners’ prize has increased by 900 per cent since the current CAF administration took office, rising from $200,000 to $2 million.
The increase is expected to provide greater financial support for national associations, reward sporting success and encourage further investment in the women’s game across Africa.
Historic edition ahead
The announcement comes ahead of the 2026 WAFCON in Morocco, which will be the first edition of the tournament to feature 16 teams following CAF’s expansion of the competition.
With increased prize money and more teams competing, CAF hopes the tournament will further raise the profile of women’s football on the continent while strengthening the financial sustainability of participating national teams.
