Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has praised his team’s progress as Ghana prepare to face Malawi in the quarter-final of the 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The Queens are aiming to reach the WAFCON semi-final for the second consecutive time after finishing third last year. A place in the last four would also secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
The quarter-final will be played on Sunday, August 9, with Ghana facing a Malawi side they beat 4–0 in a pre-tournament friendly.
Despite losing 1–0 to Cameroon in their opening Group D match, the Black Queens responded with a draw against Mali to finish second in the group with four points.
Kim Björkegren has been encouraged by his team’s improvement but recognises the threat posed by Malawi as Ghana look to move one step closer to the semi-finals.
“They-Malawi- are pretty good; hardworking group. It’s going to be tough for us. We also see our potential, we believe in ourselves.”
“We think that we have improved in this tournament…but also believe in ourselves and can keep the ball in the team, take care of the chances a little bit better than we have done so far but we need to do this to our game” Bjorkegren said in a pre-game presser.
