Kwame Opoku with the Black Stars

Kumasi Asante Kotoko Sporting Club striker Kwame Opoku is adamant that playing for the Porcupine Warriors prepares a player to play for Ghana’s National Men’s Football Team, the Black Stars.

Kwame Opoku said this in an interview with Kotoko media where he talked about his controversial game winning penalty kick that got Kotoko to beat Golden Kick and win the 2025 MTN FA Cup.

The 2-1 win over Golden Kick secured Kotoko’s qualification to next season’s CAF Confederation Cup that commences in September.

After producing 11 goal contributions in 17 games in the Ghana Premier League in the 2024-2025 season, Opoku earned a return to the Black Stars where he competed in the Unity Cup featuring in Ghana’s 2-1 loss to Nigeria.

The 26 year old played 45 minutes in Ghana’s loss to Nigeria in London and Opoku believes that playing for Kotoko prepares a player to compete in the Black Stars.

“Me having an opportunity to play with the national team feels like I don’t see any difference in the two because Kotoko is a big club. Playing Kotoko rather prepares you to play for the national team; even at the national team, I tell them Kotoko is Ghana’s Barcelona…because it’s a team that everybody wish to play so far as you are playing in Ghana” he said.
