Minister for Sports and Recreation Kofi Iddie Adams has paid a courtesy call on Professor Rita Akosua Dickson, Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, on 22 August 2025, ahead of the Sports Medicine Association–Ghana; Sports Medicine Conference

During the meeting at the Council Chamber, the Vice-Chancellor urged increased investment in campus sports infrastructure and appealed for the inclusion of priority facilities in the 2026 national budget.

She referenced ongoing works such as the hockey pitch and tennis facilities, noting KNUST’s commitment to a holistic education model that values athlete wellbeing alongside academic excellence.

The Minister commended KNUST’s leadership in integrating sports medicine into higher education. He emphasised that modern sport is driven by science, structured training and clear medical protocols that safeguard athletes and enhance performance.

He indicated the Ministry’s readiness to collaborate with universities on specialist training pathways, standardised event medical minimums and pre-participation screening across codes.

Professor Christian Agyare, Provost of the College of Health Sciences, explained that the Minister’s visit precedes his keynote at the national Sports Medicine Conference, whose theme focuses on elevating standards from grassroots to elite levels.

He noted the conference’s growth from a departmental initiative to a platform of national relevance, aligning with policy reforms the Ministry is advancing.

Speaking at the meeting, Kofi Adams said the Ministry will work with academia, the National Ambulance Service and federations to operationalise practical standards for event readiness, screening and emergency response, and to accelerate the training of sports medicine professionals.

He affirmed that Government support would be channelled through clear regulation, targeted funding and coordinated delivery with sector partners.
