Manchester City survived a major scare to get past Newcastle United in the fifth round of the FA Cup after making a strong comeback at the St. James’ Park.

City beat Newcastle 3-1 after conceding a Harvey Barnes goal in the 19th minute; City tied the game in the first half through Savinho off an assist from Jeremy Doku.

Egypt international Omar Marmoush scored twice in the second half to register the win and progression to the next round ahead of a UEFA Champions League round of 16 stage tie against Real Madrid on Wednesday, March 11.

Speaking after the loss to TNT Sports, Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe attributed his team’s loss to fatigue by stating,

“Good start from us, really good for half an hour. Probably two things happened we couldn’t sustain our start in terms of energy but they also played really well. We just have to accept that.”

“I felt we maybe ran out of gas, certainly in the second half but also towards the end of the first half. We needed the ball to try and generate pressure but we couldn’t get enough of it.”
