In the heat of the ongoing controversy over food rationing at the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships, South Africa 400 Metre athlete Marlie Viljoen has shared that things are improving at the competition.

Viljoen’s compatriot Aiden Smith criticised organisers of the event that is taking place in Ghana at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium for rationing food for athletes that sparked a massive fallout in the early days of the competition.

In the wake of Smith’s bombastic statement, Deputy Director-General of Ghana’s National Sports Authority (NSA), Veronica Commey, stated at a presser that such allegations had been “independently verified to be false“. (Click highlighted text to read full story)

Speaking in the mixed zone, 25 year Viljoen, who won gold at the 2021 World University Games shared that things had improved since the start of the competition including food for athletes by stating that,

“I understand it’s not the best circumstances but they have improved immensely over the last two days.”

“The food last night was amazing but you know this is Africa, we are all going through the same thing, the circumstances are the same for everyone so I just try to cancel that out and get into that start line” she said.
