21-year-old Ajayi held his nerve in a strong field, matching his season’s best with one of the fastest times in the world this year. The Nigerian has now consistently run below 9.90 in 2026, strengthening his place among the sport’s top sprinters.
Ghana had mixed results in the final. Abdul-Rasheed Saminu finished seventh in 10.15 seconds, while Joseph Paul Amoah came ninth in 10.19 seconds after a slow start.

Saminu has already recorded a personal best of 9.84 seconds this season but has mostly run in the low 10s in major meets. His 2026 season has featured several notable performances, including a wind-assisted 9.88 seconds (+2.4) at the June 2026 LA Grand Prix, where he finished third.
He also placed sixth in the final of the African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, running 10.36 seconds after a 10.09 seconds heat. He has largely remained consistent around the low 10-second mark, keeping him competitive on the international circuit.
Joseph Paul Amoah continues his return to form, having posted a season best in the low 10-second range earlier in the year.
Ajayi’s victory adds to Nigeria’s growing sprint presence on the international stage, while Ghana’s duo will look to bounce back in the remaining meets of the season.
