A couple of players on Spain’s National Men’s Football Team have criticized former Spain Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy over comments directed at the French team.
Ahead of Spain’s 2026 FIFA World Cup semifinals clash against France on Tuesday, July 14, Rajoy stated that France “doesn’t have a single French player in its ranks” according to newspaper El Debate.
His comments were directed at France having a significant number of players on its team with immigrant backgrounds.
The statement has caused an uproar in France and Spain players Pau Cubarsi and Borja Iglesias have registered their displeasure.
“I’m not aware of this matter, but if they play for the French national team, they are French, regardless of their skin color.”

“We must show tolerance towards everyone, because we all deserve respect” Cubarsi said to RAC1.

On his part, Celta Vigo striker Borja Iglesias said to DAZN that,

“It surprises me and saddens me. We need to be more vigilant about this kind of remark. France’s multiculturalism is an asset. We are all different, and that’s what makes us rich.”
