Lando Norris returned from Formula 1’s summer break in style, producing a strategic masterclass to beat championship leader Kimi Antonelli and win a dramatic Dutch Grand Prix.

The McLaren driver overcame an early setback to finish ahead of Antonelli, with George Russell completing the podium for Mercedes.

The race was thrown into chaos on the opening lap when home favourite Max Verstappen crashed heavily at the final corner on the damp circuit, forcing a red flag.

Verstappen escaped unhurt, but the incident triggered a lengthy stoppage before the race resumed.

Antonelli then made the most of the restart, jumping ahead of Norris to take the lead.

However, McLaren’s strategy gradually shifted the momentum.

Norris and Antonelli made their first pit stops together, but McLaren kept Norris out longer during the second round of stops. That allowed the Briton to return to the track just 4.8 seconds behind Antonelli with fresher tyres.

Norris then closed the gap before the decisive battle involving Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton.

He first passed Antonelli’s Mercedes and then Hamilton’s Ferrari, taking control of the race with a series of aggressive but measured overtakes.

A late virtual safety car briefly threatened to change the picture, but McLaren chose not to pit Norris and the decision paid off as he maintained enough of a gap to secure his second consecutive victory.

Antonelli finished second, extending his championship lead over Russell to 59 points.

Russell’s third-place finish came after Mercedes ordered him to allow Antonelli through, a decision that left the Briton vulnerable to Hamilton.

Russell protested the team order, warning that Mercedes could be sacrificing his podium position. A second late virtual safety car ultimately gave him enough breathing room to hold off Hamilton and secure third.

Hamilton finished fourth, ahead of Charles Leclerc, while Oscar Piastri was sixth for McLaren.

Further down the order, Fernando Alonso delivered one of the drives of the afternoon, taking ninth for Aston Martin after starting 18th.

The Spaniard used a one-stop strategy, completing a lengthy opening stint on soft tyres before switching to hards and holding off drivers on much fresher rubber in the closing laps.

The victory moves Norris to within 83 points of Antonelli in the championship, keeping his title hopes alive with the season entering its decisive phase.

For McLaren, it was another statement that their pace and strategic execution could make them a serious force in the championship run-in.
