Ghana pulls out of 2018 Davis Cup

Ghana’s tennis team, the Golden Rackets have been forced to pull out of this month’s Davis Cup competition due to the 17,000 US dollar debt the Ghana Tennis Federation owed the International Tennis Federation in affiliation fees.

The affiliation fees, which was accrued over a 3 year period, were paid for last week by CEO of McDan Shipping Company, Daniel McKorley, but the payment came too late, by which time the ITF had already conducted the draw, eliminating Ghana in the process.

General Secretary of the Ghana Tennis Federation, Phillipina Frimpong, confirmed the news to Citi Sports.

“We were forced to pull out of the Davies Cup because by the time the affiliation fees were paid, the draw of the competition had already been done,” she said.

“We were initially suspended because of our failure to pay the affiliation fees over the three year period. The ITF were unwilling to overturn the suspension before we paid.”

Ghana dropped from the prestigious Euro Africa Zone two between the late 90s and 2000s to Zone Four. But following the ITF’s scrapping of Zone Four, Ghana climbed automatically to Zone Three.
