#Number12 Exposé: Fianoo steps down from gov’t interim committee

Government will have to reconstitute its proposed management committee for the running of football in Ghana after it was confirmed that GHALCA chairman, Cudjoe Fianoo, decided to step down from the group.

Last week, the government announced that Dr. Kofi Amoah, Abedi Pele, Eva Okyere, Rev. Osei Kofi and Cudjoe Fianoo, had been put in a committee to preside over all football-related activities while a roadmap was drawn to reform the Ghana Football Association after revelations of corruption were made in the Anas Aremeyaw Anas exposé.

Fianoo opted out of the committee because going along with government’s plans to freeze all football activities would hurt the league clubs he represented as GHALCA chairman.

“The highest office of the land gave me an appointment but I need to weigh the pros and cons of the appointment in relation to my position as GHALCA chairman. Just from a cursory look, I could see that there a level of conflict.

If the government had come to GHALCA for us pick a member to join the committee or the GHALCA general assembly had asked me to represent them on that committee, I would not have any problem.

For now, I have assured my members of good leadership hence my decision not to serve on the committee.”

Clubs like Liberty Professionals, Dreams FC, Hearts of Oak, Wa All Stars, and Elmina Sharks have all revealed the financial burden the freeze had placed on their coffers and thus, they would be happy with a quick resolution to the situation.

Fianoo’s decision seems to follow calls from league clubs for him to step down from the committee which they viewed as a betrayal of their trust.

GHALCA spokesperson, Otuo Acheampong, told Citi News on Sunday that members of GHALCA were unhappy Fianoo was part of the committee.

Government was set to inaugurate the committee on Monday but that move was put on hold.

Citi Sports sources say that a delegation made up of Sports Minister, Isaac Asiamah, and Alex Asante, Ghana FA Protocol Officer and Isaac Addo, Ghana FA Secretary will head to Zurich, Switzerland to hold talks with FIFA on how Ghana should proceed with its plans of dissolving the FA following the Anas exposé that highlighted corruption in football in Ghana.

The decisions taken in that meeting will determine when the committee will be inaugurated.
