Asaba 2018: Janet Amponsah, Hor Halutie make women’s 100m final

Ghanaian female sprinters Janet Amponsah and Hor Halutie have both qualified for the women’s 100m finals at the on-going African Senior Athletics Championships in Asaba, Nigeria.

But male sprinter Emmanuel Yeboah misses out after finishing 3rd in his semi final with a time of 10.49sec.

Hor finished 3rd in her semi final race with a time of 11.61sec, bettering her 11.77sec run in the heats yesterday.

Ivorian sprint queen Marie Josee Ta Lou finished first in semi final 1, clocking 11.26sec.

Amponsah finished second in the second semi finals, crossing the finishing line in 11.68sec, same time as Joy Udo-Gabriel who finished first.

“I’ve won medals in the 4x100m relays at the African championships but never a medal in the individual events. Hopefully, I’ll get a medal this time,” Amponsah told Citi Sports after making the final

There were three men’s semi finals while there were only two women’s semi final events which meant the first three in the women’s race automatically make the final while only the top two are guaranteed passage into this afternoon’s final.

While both Hor and Amponsah qualified automatically by virtue of position, by finishing 3rd, Yeboah needed to have a faster time than any of the other runners who finished below second but 10.49sec was eventually not good enough.

It is a disappointing end to the competition for the 21-year old but he has shown enough promise that he can only get better if he continues to work.

The women’s 100m final is scheduled for 14:55 local time.
