The Venue Local Organising Committee of the 2018 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations was inaugurated on Tuesday at the Cape Coast sports Stadium.

The 15-member LOC members for the host city of Cape Coast will be chaired by Thomas Adjei, Dep. Central Regional Minister and also includes George Osafo Agyei Central Regional National Sports Authority, Nana Amaba Eyiba 1 ( Queen-mother -Effutu ) and Chief Sup. Jonathan Lamptey of the Ghana Police Service as members.

The main LOC chairperson, Freda Prempeh, was at the function together with Deputy Sports Minister, Perry Okudzeto, Hon. Ernest Arthur, Hon. Thomas Adjei and Nana Amaba Eyiaba.

Madam Prempeh explained that the venue LOC would be in charge of the efficient running of the tournament in Cape Coast which is the second city hosting the rest of the tournament in November this year with Accra being the other city hosting the tournament.

She urged the venue LOC to work hard and pull off their various tasks.

“We have about 6 weeks to the start of the tournament. Thus, I hope that those who have been chosen to form the venue LOC will not let the main LOC and that they will deliver on their mandate.”

She went ahead to address concerns of Ghana possibly losing the hosting rights of the tournament.

“We heard some speculation concerning the tournament but let me make things clear. We have not had any formal communication from CAF over the hosting of the Women’s AFCON and so, Ghana is poised to host the tournament later this year.”

The news of Ghana’s failure to host the tournament gathered momentum after CAF boss Ahmad Ahmad said that his entity was looking at the possibility of getting new hosts for the tournament.

CAF came out to say that while it was true that nothing official had been stated concerning Ghana, a proper announcement on the tournament would be made after its Executive Committee in Egypt this month.

If Ghana does host, which cities and facilities will be used?

According to Madam Prempeh, Ghana will welcome 7 other countries for the tournament. 4 of the teams will be based in Accra while the other four will head to Cape Coast.

The teams in Accra will train at the El-Wak Stadium and the Presec Legon Park while the teams in Cape Coast will train at the Ndoum and the Robert Mensah Stadia.

The referees will go through their paces at the Legon Stadium.

Which teams have made it?

Ghana (host nation), Algeria, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Mali, South Africa, Zambia and Nigeria.
